Why couldn’t they do this on national television at Millrose last week? Too much of a variable environment. They need perfect time trials. I’m surprised they’ve had such success at the international level given this approach. Although that success is usually in similar time trial races (like Doha where Frerichs struggled in a tactical steeple but the others did well in time trials).

Why? The BTC guys would have wiped the track with him. He would have been on the turn when they were finishing.

The men never race, miss qualifying standards, and then run fast time trials when it means nothing.

The IAAF/ USATF needs to have blackout periods around national championships where non-collegiate athletes can't compete.

So this weekend it is USA Indoors or that is it.

But having said that, Jager and others probably don't have a qualifier for USAs right?

Good for them. Olympic year. USA indoors a waste of time. Training thru. No brainer on that one.

Maybe if USATF didn't host the meet at 5k feet of elevation more distance talent would come to play.

Please tell me that's hyperbole! Just imagine the endless ramifications of implementing such a policy. If you really care that much you need to personally reach out to each athlete and tell them what you are disappointed about their choice rather than spew out "the gubbamint oughta do sumpin' about that!"

That seems like a huge overreach. Blackouts are reasonable when they are put in place as a condition of participating in a USATF event. E.g. if you decide to run the Olympic trials marathon, you cannot run another marathon within X days of that event. In that case, the athlete is getting something they want (running in the OT), and they are willingly agreeing to give up the right to run other races in exchange. It is a tradeoff that the athlete is agreeing to. But simply declaring that there shall be no non-collegiate track meets in all the land over a certain period is too heavy handed.

If you aren't getting the turnout you want at your event, the answer is to make your event better and to provide more incentive for athletes to show up at nationals, not to try to snuff out any other meets that might compete with your own.

BRAVO!! to these runners. What does the usatf offer? runners pay fees, no pension no salary nothing that resembles any sports league on the planet.

Precisely.

Considering that they were actually running a race for once, they probably didn't go because they didn't think that they could beat the WCAP Kenyan-Americans, who were born and raised and train at altitude all of the time, given that this race was at altitude. They've seen this happen in previous ABQ Nationals. The Bowerman women didn't have any such group to beat, so they went and got their titles and places.

Also, good to see Evan Jager back healthy and in pretty good shape already in February.

Cooper Teare is really showing that he was no mere high school phenom. I recall the workout they put a video up from his senior year and it seemed to me that he looked like a future pro.
