Background: going into track season right now. PRs are 4:46 mile, 10:30 2mile and 16:30 5k
My hamstrings are tight and I can't seem to ever completely loosen them up. I feel out of shape whenever I do any speed and it feels like I'm getting no energy return from the ground and I have to put so much effort in just to get a stride that matches the pace I'm doing. Either that or I somehow did actually get out of shape for no reason. I feel normal on easy runs though which I usually do around 7:30 pace. Heart rate stays low on these runs which indicates a solid aerobic base so I don't get why doing any kind of workout feels impossible. Can tight hamstrings really make running fast that much harder is what I'm really wondering. My goals for the season are 4:30 mile and 10:00 2mile, which should seem reachable based on my 5k PR from cross country. However, doing these paces in workouts feels way too hard and it feels like so much effort to extend my stride to match the pace. These paces shouldn't be a problem considering my PRs and the indication of a good aerobic base already established. But what really got me concerned today is there was a 400m time trial at practice and I ran an EMBARRASSING 63! WTH happened!? I know I'm definitely endurance-oriented, but I should've AT LEAST been sub-60. Are my hamstrings so tight that it's slowing me down that much? As soon as I started the 400 it felt like I wasn't warmed up at all and I felt awkward trying to accelerate. I'm thinking of taking a few days off and see if that helps. Is my season ruined? Or is that I just need to loosen up my hamstrings and I will have all my speed back once I do so. Any advice would be appreciated.
