We have full professionals running 25 seconds behind the top in 3000m races (e.g. steeplechasers in a fast flat race), this should not be a reason for shaming.
Tuohy has run close enough to 9 min in the past, so trying for a similar time did not seem completely foolhardy. Cain might have been able to run 9:15-19 with a more defensive first half but it also makes sense that she did not want to lose all contact to the field. Sure, 9:24 is far from competitive, but one should also not that in many countries it would put her in the national top ten, at least in the indoor season.
25 seconds , I understand. Tuohy being in the race is understandable. Cain doesn't look like a professional runner. She's at least 15-20 lbs overweight. The field was not a world class field. There are women who can run 8:30 indoors. My question is this: What benefit is it to her to essentially run all by herself? She needs to get in shape and run some time trials that show she even belongs in a professional race.
