Of course there are plenty that don’t cross the line but it’s all about risk and you’re in a group that is a higher risk than any other. By far. It’s not even close.

this....or you will be done after one season
Set high expectations from the beginning but make an effort to build gradually and to include activities that the kids will enjoy so as to decrease the dropout rate. Of course, as an assistant, you'll be limited in what you can do. Use your expertise to improve the quality of workouts by attending to the little details, running along with them to make sure they're not dogging it, and to be ahead of the game with regard to athletes who are on the verge of injury, need to do injury prevention, or need more sleep.
Kids sometimes develop crushes on their coaches and teachers. Nobody could ever accuse you if you are never alone with them or if you dont write or text them.

Isn't it sad that the most common advice on here is to tell the new coach to stay away from the girls? Are you all that jaded?
America is just prudish, we really shouldn't bother with what happens in other's lives.
If it involves by underage daughter, then yes I will be involved in your life.
Great additions! Thanks!

Hiring a 22 year old male to coach girls XC shows a head coach that has a lack of experience or has his head in the sand. I will never ever ever ever hire another male assistant coach under 30 unless they are married or gay. The amount of 20-something coaches that have slept with their athletes before they graduated or within days after would shock a LOT of people. It happens ALL THE TIME.
So you think being married or gay will stop a person from underage sex? You are really naive.

Lots of good best practices

Again, it’s all about risk. A married man is less likely than a single 22 year old to engage in inappropriate sexual activity with a high school girl they are coaching. A gay man in very unlikely to have sex with a girl in high school they are coaching. Anything is possible, of course.

I’m going to be the assistant coach at a high school in the fall. What do I need to know?
You need to know how to feed the cats.
Wear a Tinman shirt to assert your dominance
Don’t do too much if you have head coach aspirations and the head coach is in for a long haul, especially if you’re more talented at coaching than the head coach.
All of a sudden you’re stuck and they’re in a cozy position because the ad thinks it’s all them.
Keep your junk in your pants at all times.
