Congrats to NewBury's Sean Brosnan for being named for BOTH the boy's and girl's coach of the year!
Question: Why was he selected as the girl's coach over Buchannan's Brian Weaver?

In my opinion, Buchanan's coach did better with his girls program this year, but I'm guessing it has to do with the fact that NPHS girls didn't make state last year but won this year. More improvement, although the Buchanan girls all improved steadily throughout the season, especially their freshmen.
I agree. Not sure who sits on the voting committee but I think Buchanan was definitely the better choice to represent California on the girl's side.
Newbury Park girls didn’t even beat Great Oak at NXN either

So if NP didn't get a big transfer do you think he'd still be worth of girls coach of the year?
If NP didn’t get all the boy transfers, he wouldn’t be worth the boys coach of year either.

Except nobody on NP’s varsity team is a transfer.

I am a long time XC & track coach. I never thought much of coaches awards. I understand why people might get into that but there are quite a few of us that are geared to the feeling that it should always be about the athletes we coach. Just another perspective.

The Youngs live far away from Newbury Park.

That doesn’t make them transfers. Do you know what a transfer is? Either way, Nico came to Newbury Park the same year Coach Sean Brosnan started coaching, and this was before he had any significant credentials.
You're not wrong. I think the award isn't an indicator of the coach's ability as much as it is about the athletes though. There are some tremendous coaches at the small school level who will never win an NXN or CIF title and therefore never be nominated for this award. I just thought the Buchannan girls were more deserving than the NP girls.

It makes sense what you are saying but it is not why I am not into coaching awards.
I have won a coaching award twice and it did not feel good either time. I felt like it cheapened what I coach for. I have never wanted recognition because then it looks like I am in this for me and that is not the case at all.
I want my team to be successful but I don't want an award for myself that would be caused by that success. Kind of a paradox.

That's why I only mentioned the girls' team, where one of their scorers was indeed a transfer from a nearby school.

Do you know what a transfer is? According to the California government, "An interdistrict transfer/reciprocal agreement is when parents/guardians wish to register/admit/enroll their student(s) at a school other than the designated school that is in their attendance area outside of their district."
According to the Conejo School District (which Newbury Park is a part of) where it discusses the process of transferring between middle school and high school, "Parents do need to submit an Interdistrict Transfer Agreement “permit” when their child promotes from TK to kindergarten or elementary school to middle school or from middle school to high school. For example, a student approved to attend a K-5 elementary school does not need additional approvals until they wish to enter a 6-8 middle school. A student approved for a 6-8 middle school does not need additional approvals until they wish to enter a 9-12 high school."
Three of their top seven at the state meet and NXN were transfers. They transferred out of their designated school to Newbury Park.
Now, before you go and get all bent out of shape, the fact is, they had three transfers on their varsity team that won state. It's possible they would not have won state without them and if they would not have won state, the coach would probably not have been coach of the year. It doesn't mean it's his fault or that anyone did anything wrong, but those are facts.
Who were those three? What designated school did they transfer out of?
Newbury Park has one of the best coaches in the country and he developed all the athletes year by year. Hands down an amazing program created. You don't win state and national titles by getting lucky. His boys team won a national title with no transfers. MIlesplit even posted about this.
People will always take shots at coaches, teams and athletes at the top. It just the nature of the beast. The lets run guys said it best "The coaching threads are the worst because the jealous coaches that can't get the job done have to complain about something to make themselves feel better".
Milesplit got their facts wrong. They have 7 transfers in their top 13 runners on the boy’s side. Most of them transferred after 8th grade.
This is a typical Newbury Park post (so defensive). The thread was started to debate if the coach deserved the award over the Buchanan coach on the girl’s side. Nobody criticized the coach or the program. They have a great team, no doubt about it. However, they do have transfers that contribute to the success (boys and girls). That is not debatable.
Milesplit was correct. All their athlete on that NXN championship team were developed by Newbury Park from freshman year ( no transfers).
Maybe best results we have seen from a program and Coach in high school. I agree with the poster above. Jealous coaches are nasty on the boards. You know NP is doing a great job if people are doing anything they can to discredit their success.
Job well done = terrible bitter coaches to post lies

Why would pointing out they have transfers discredit their success? What lies were posted? Did the kids in question transfer into Newbury Park? Do they have kids on the team that ran at state or NXN that live outside the school boundary that required an inter district transfer to attend Newbury Park? If they transfer before their freshman year, it is still a transfer. What is wrong with having transfers?
It seems they had all those kids since 9th grade. This makes no transfers. I only see one girl that switched schools from another inner district school to Newbury Park. No boys transferred in at all to the State and NXN championship boys team.
In regards to winning the girls coach of the year the USTFCCCA has on their website " Among the factors taken into consideration were team score and placement at the state championships, margin of victory, performance against rankings if available, individual championships, and how their teams’ performances stacked up to previous years (e.g. first title in school history, consecutive titles, etc.)"
I agree the Buchanan did a great job with his girls, but so did the Newbury Park coach. No one is better, they just can only pick one winner. Congrats to both coaches and programs.
