Tuohy is very smart. She most likely earned a full ride from one of NC State's academic scholarships.
if you are so smart academically, why go to nc state? 84th ranked per US News. Go to mich or notre dame or stanford, they have scholarships..she picked the lowest ranked school academically on her list.
Then why does any great student athlete go to Oregon? It not highly rated academically.
They go for the athletics. If Tuohy is a high achieving AP student with ACT at 32 or higher, she can go anywhere. She can go to grad school at any elite school if she has great grades as an undergrad.
Just be happy for the young lady.
Imagine being a solid returning sophomore on the NC State XC team. You are happy that they get one good recruit. Then two. Then three. Then all of a sudden you are off the top 5. Then off the top 7. You are now struggling to make the track travel team.
That would kind of stink.

That's sports, man. It happens in every sport and at all levels.
She is a very good student - but it seems she works very hard for those grades. She clearly couldn’t handle the stretch of ap exams and running last spring - so maybe she made the decision to not overstretch herself academically in college so she could handle both running and school... there are two Types of students in hs who get good grades - one is the type who works very hard - studies all the time, not all of those students should go ivy or top schools and they need more than just hard work to survive

Please explain why N.C..State is considered a good school?
It's a state school and it's in Raleigh N.C. point proven.
I probably spent too much time in school, but have one of my degrees from NC State (for reference, I also went to a liberal arts college, a "top" public school, and two Ivy League programs). The difference in quality of education is not as vast as you might think, and there were some very sharp people in my program at NCSU (grad degree in a quantitative discipline), plus it's definitely strong in certain fields. From my time as a TA, yes the bottom tier of undergrad students are significantly worse, but there are various reasons why people pick a school, and the top students at a place like NC State will rival those from any institution.
I agree NC state got an awesome recruiting class and will definitely be a contender. I wonder how many they will redshirt to keep the program going, they already have some great runners there who are contributing. Also, people are forgetting about Stanford- they were 3rd and are returning five of those girls. They are adding Dudek and Starcher to the roster. Excited to see what Starcher can do after a year of training with elite girls. She has always had to train on her own. Dudek is already a Stud!
Happy for her.
Don´t really understand it. Nothing against NC State but if you´re the top prospect you can go anywhere. I feel like I would pick Oregon/Colorado if I didn´t care about academics. If I did care then an Ivy, Stanford, UVA, Umich, UNC, etc. It looks like they´ll be loaded and she´ll have a ton of good teammates. That matters too.

NC State is on the up-swing in her sport. They already landed a great class from her general area. Runners talk to each other more than ever before. I am sure they hype each other up. Also, coach Henes is not like Geiger. She develops people very well. Don’t look at the Frazier’s as examples as that Dad was an insane helicopter parent. People also underestimate the value of a female head coach working with a female team. That is an absolutely massive draw for any female runner.

Certainly they will be top contenders in Cross Country, barring injuries/illness, Track still favors Sprint Schools.
Marlee Starlipper talked about the team environment they have there. Apparently différent from the other schools they visited. I think a lot of girls chose the school for the team. I can definitely see where that would draw someone like Walters in because FM also has a team oriented environment.
Touhy also grew up on a team like that, it would definitely appeal to her. The fact that they will have so many other top girls will help too because now she will have other girls she can train with.
At the end of the day it only matters where Touhy is happy. She is getting a good education and having the opportunity to be on an amazing team.
Personally what I find most interested is she is going to a non Nike sponsored team.
NC State is a very good technically oriented school. Offers degrees in engineering, veterinary fields, architecture, and many agricultural fields as well as many in nursing, etc. Virtually all the degrees lead to something, unlike some of the elite, humanity driven schools....

Did anybody say it was a good school?
Guys seriously it has one of the best computer science programs in the world
It also has a top engineering and math School
Their business school is really solid
Its ranked around a hundred out of the top schools in the world
You're probably looking at 5000 major institutions in that survey
It's one of the top research schools in the world
No it doesn't have the elite reputation of some better known schools but that doesn't mean it's not really good
I'm not saying it's among the very best I'm just saying it's a solid school that certainly way better than average
It's also a big state school that has a lot of funding and a lot of resources
They have great athletic facilities and clearly have recruited some great runners
A guy I know went to NC State for engineering and it seems to have served him well.
It's a State school, just shut up, it ain't squat.
Why all the talk about ACADEMICS, this is a running sight. A degree is a degree.

They can transfer to Baylor and be in the top three.
half and half here
1st half - the only AP fact that is out there is that she did not run the Loucks game 3200 last spring as it conflicted with the time of a scheduled AP exam
there is no factual info that "she couldn't handle the stretch of AP exams and running last spring".
2nd half - you are pretty accurate on this one. If you use athletic talent to gain entry to one of the top academic schools, the balance between academics and athletics can be quite difficult. While it's exciting and challenging to be around a bunch of talented geniuses, your GPA can suffer when the first mid term results come in.
On the flip side if you graduate from NC State with a 3.7 GPA, a research relationship with a professor, and X time All-American on your resume, you will be able to get into grad school, or find a job later in life. If the student wants a more demanding academic experience, NC State also has a reputable honors college.
Another thought here, at a "flagship state school", the famous AP exams above will actually count as full college credits on your transcript, reducing the number of credits you must earn to graduate, whereas at a top school, the AP classes merely strengthen your application, and allow you to enroll in a higher level class. If she combines AP credits and some summer classes with the regular terms, she can easily complete her BA in 3 years at NC State. That leaves room in her 5 years of eligibility to either start graduate work at NC State, or consider being a grad transfer, ie. more bang for the buck from her scholarship.
Lastly, I believe the Ivys were a non starter here as there are no athletic scholarships.
Inside source says she was leaning towards Michigan but doesn’t like Harte and when Harte committed to Michigan she decided to go NC State
Try out to be Chicago Bears placekicker, as good of a chance as any.

What are the odds she becomes a 4x NCAA XC Champion? Who could beat her 2020?
