I have some big goals for this cross country season (my last as a high schooler) not only for myself but for our team as well. I bumped up my mileage from track (about 75 per week) to about 95 per week for 4 weeks this summer after a two week build-up period following one week off after track. Near the end of the fourth week my quads got indredibly sore and I just hammered through it thinking the pain would go away. Well the following week was a camp in the mountains and it absolutely obliterated my legs, esp. my quads. I could not run uphill at all and had to walk which was embarassing and frustrating. I had been doing a tempo and a fartlek and some other hard run weekly to go along with some short hill sprints, 1 long hill workout, and 1 long run per week (17 to 18 miles). I do weights and circuits 2 to 3 times per week, some plyo drills every few days, core and ab work every other day, ice baths and massage every other day, one light speed sharpening session per week, and try to eat right and drink right (hydrate, electrolytes, protein, etc.). i take a multivitamin, calcium, and an iron pill every few days. I don't feel like I'm super tired but being accustomed to 9+ hours of sleep per night and then only getting 6 to7 all last week sure didn't help. I wasn't able to do a single hard run as my legs were dying and I took a day off mid-week and then continued easy running. This past Sunday my legs were not only sore but extremely tight so I took off another day. I ran easy the past two days but during today's first hard workout of the season I just got drilled and could only do 1/2 the workout. My coach wants me in the pool tomorrow so my legs can rest which after struggling through no good workouts the past 2 weeks and seemingly wasting precious time seems like a good idea. If I can recover ASAP it would be great but I don't know what else to do besides rest and recover. Are there any little remedies or helpful quick-fixes that can speed the process up so I can get back to quality training soon. It's so frustrating as i was doing fine for several weeks at high mielage until my quads suddenly went out. I still want to make a breakthorugh this year and go after my goals...does anyopne have any advice as to how I can get my legs back to normal again and my quads able to handle the workouts again. People that have never outran me before are killing me in practice and I just want to be able to do the workouts again without struggling so much. Besides, rest and light jogging with some pool work these enxt couple of days and massage and ice baths as well, what else can I do to speed the recovery process? Sorry for rambling on...it's just frustrating.
