Retard was a general term that just meant idiot when growing up. Somehow it got hijacked to become a term solely derogatory towards people with developmental disabilities. That is not how it is used.
Anyway the Giants suck this year. And last year. And next year.
Yeah. Shakespeare and Chaucer called people a lot worse and are revered as literally geniuses. “That’s retarded” is like “man, that was pretty dumb.” There is little difference between those two sentences.
The internet is pretty merciless toward celebrities and politicians with insults but expect them to be perfectly polite and PC.
Ever heard the saying "The future is already here; it's just not very evenly distributed"?
Nearly 15 years ago, a friend of mine got very offended at my use of the word "retarded". Funny thing, she also liked to brag about her Mensa membership. I rolled my eyes, thought the whole thing was retarded, but decided not to say it around her, in the interest of not being a dick.
She had no problem with "dumb" (offensive to the mute, obviously), "idiot", "moron" (essentially, older versions of "retarded" which had a medical meaning at one time...I vaguely think she might have had some excuse for why those didn't count, but I don't remember), etc. Neither, in my experience, did anyone else. So for a long time, I would mention this and point out the hypocrisy.
Pointing out that ideologues don't follow their ideologies all the way through isn't much of an argument. Someone is always willing to go farther.
Nearly 10 years ago I found online forums where many people objected to all those terms, under the then new-to-me umbrella of "ableism" (although that had already been germinating for a while itself). I didn't like where this was going, but again, out of politeness I'd avoid using certain words around people who were upset by them. Basically all the elements of today's SJWs were observable then and there -- some of the crazier things you see on Facebook and Twitter now are basically repeats of things that were circulating around Tumblr 7-8 years ago.
(Oh yeah. They definitely objected to the word "crazy". Stigmatizes mental illness, doncha know. Probably object to "doncha"..."culturally appropriating" one dialect or another, I'm sure.)
So the New York Giants have caught up to the PC/SJW vanguard of maybe 15 years ago. Give them another 8 years and who knows where they and the rest of the mainstream will be?
