They do not favor NY. Many states allow middle schoolers to compete. Some states allow transfers to compete immediately, some make them sit 90 days, and some make them sit en entire year. Some states have open enrollment while others do not. Some of you would be very upset to learn that some kids don't even live in the same state as the team that they compete for. As far as team names go, we change ours every year and Nike has never questioned it.

I agree NXN doesn’t favor any state. However, certain states like NY have favorable rules and that’s just life.

If Colorado had NY’s rules and CA’s population they would dominate NXN.

On the ironic side of things, Colorado just passed a rule that goes into affect next school year that any public school participating in any post CHSAA event (ie: NXN, basketball tournaments) can utilize any private school athlete (who is willing to participate) on their team within a 20 mile radius of their campus. Should be interesting to see what all-star Colorado teams start dominating at NXN and watch NY loose their minds! NXN has to let them do it too, to stay compliant with CHSAA rules! It just got interesting.

Kelsey did not run xc varsity in 7th or 8th grade... so maybe actual evidence it’s better to wait to run varsity ?

The Wheeler twins have run at NXN for the past 3 years and they are only 9th graders!!! Nike should do something about this to protect those little girls! They won't be varsity by their senior year.

Perhaps...and perhaps even if that is the case they will still be glad they had the opportunity to be on a national champion team together when they were freshmen. Or maybe they will be like the Vetter twins and run at NXN as 8th and 9th graders and then again as seniors. As seniors they were also both on the Penn Relay DMR Championship team.

Also I’m pretty sure Chmiel ran varsity indoor/outdoor track as a 7th and 8th grader. She definitely medaled in the 3k at the state meet as an 8th grader.

Run as a 7th grader? Fine, but even one race for your team means you are using a year of eligibility.

This isn't the NCAA. NXN follows high school rules. Why would they be more restrictive than the states that allow it?

These are simply poor opinions. They are based on the idea that NXN is the be all and end all of high school XC. Sure it is a great event and the few teams that qualify get a great experience. The reality is that the sport is based on the day in and day out activities, practices and races conducted during the months of late August thru early November. The states don't care about NXN. Instead they determine what rules they should implement for their own state championships - sanctioned by their own high school associations. Some states allow junior high runners to compete and so be it. I will leave it to those states to determine what they feel best.

NXR and NXN are great events and I give Nike credit to allow all runners who are eligible in their state associations to be eligible for these events. Why would you not allow a runner who was part of the team all year not to be able to represent in the NXR/NXN?

Disadvantaged and unfair are excuses for teams who worry way too much about winning.

For the obvious reason that states have different rules, and to have a meaningful national championship, all competitors must have the same restrictions.

If you had a chess championship, and New York allowed 10 minutes to make a move, and Nevada only allowed 2 minutes, then any championship involving these state's competitors would have to be played under different rules than at least one the states used. To have a match where the New York competitor was allowed 10 minutes and the Nevada one 2 minutes would be ridiculous. Same principle here.

Why would the New York Chess player be allowed to continue to take 10 minutes per move when the other players get less time? You want to have to have a national chess championship, someone may have to play under rules that are different than they competed with in their own state. Even rules that are different than they practiced with day in and day out.

If the NBA sends a team to a basketball world championship, they play under those rules. Shorter 3 point line, different size lane, etc. Yes, the NBA players play and practice under different rules, but to have a real championship, they adjust,

You continue to pick and choose. If a state has a 30 day transfer rule and another state has a year rule, does NXN enforce a one year restriction for all schools even though the transfer students have been competing for months and helped the team win the state meet? How about age limits. States are not consistent. So the old guy on the team gets booted by Nike because they enforce the lowest age of all states? How about summer contact? Some states allow it while others do not? DQ all states that coached in the summer? How about states that don't allow kids to compete against college runners or pros? Dq all runners who ran track meets against pros?

This is false. If the purpose is to compare apples to apples on a totally level playing field, this would be correct. However, the entire purpose of NXN is to have a championship race between high school teams AS THEY ACTUALLY EXISTED AND RAN DURING THE SEASON. In order to do that, the teams from different states need to be allowed to follow the rules that actually existed during the season. Those rules are different in different states.

In following either one of those two values there are going to be imperfections, as any set of rules is likely to be imperfect when applied to . Maybe you value absolute fairness above matching the teams as they actually exist, but that is not what Nike's goal has ever been.

Perhaps footlocker would be preferable for you. They did not allow Cory McGhee to compete when she qualified as an 8th grader.

Kelsey Chmiel qualified for NXN five years in a row (8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th grades). Should she have been told her senior year "Sorry, you've already had your four years"?

Lauren Ping has qualified as a 7th, 8th, & 9th grader. She could conceivably end up being a six-time qualifier (the first ever, if it were to happen). I just don't foresee Nike cutting her (or anyone else) off after four times.
