I think the fastest is Missy Buttry.
I think the fastest is Missy Buttry.
I'm not 100% sure of where he was born, but Dan Wilson ran in CT for high school.

Hey Fanya, Dimick was good, but the 2:11:53 was run acroos the Lake Ponchartrain bridge with a 30 mph tailwind all the way.
John was in reality a 2:15 marathoner, still good.
As for New Mexico:
Krum was born in El Paso.

As someone said, have to scratch at least one Downin from that list. Guy Stearns and Mike Gagne should be on there. Cathy (Schiro) O'Brien (two Olympics) and Erica Palmer (NCAA cross-country champ) belong, and Sean O'Brien and Russell Brown soon will too if they don't already.
What about Lynn Jennings?? Not sure if she is native though.
Wow, I guess there aren't a whole lot of Californicators on here!
I'll have to go with Steve Scott for the men and Deena (Drosin) Kastor for the Women.
That is unless someone comes along and tells me they were both born in outer Mongolia or something.
Scott McGowan is a native born North Dakotan. He has run 3.37.73, dont know if its the fastest, but it sure has to be up there.
1st sub 4 in Montana or North Dakata? the question was native born, and mcgowan was born in north dakota...so technically no native born montanan has broken 4 for the mile...
I'm an Illinoisian--
On Craig Virgin--people may have run faster, but he was so much better than anyone else when he was in HS. Stories of his lapping everyone else in the 2 mile (and in the distances down to the 400!) are legion.
Jim Spivey was a hero of mine. He went to a high school in our conference, and I remember taking tons of pictures of him at the Pan Am games and track and field trials in the late 80s.
