They have no identity and no political influence (as a generation). No one cares what Generation X thinks about. They live in the shadow of the Baby Boomers and have seen the Millennials over take them. As far as music, culture, or politics they have made little impact. The Baby Boomers somehow either spoiled or weakened them. The Millennials are very different.
I know a few gen xers. Your post states: “No one cares what Generation X thinks about.” I’d say your logic is flawed. Generation X doesn’t care what everyone else thinks about and can formulate their own thoughts without spouting them to the world. Ergo, their idiotic ramblings aren’t all over the damn place.

The boomers control the establishment. The generation X are wannabes. They long for what the boomers have but they are losing. But The millenials are changing the game.
The millenials rule technology in a way that generation X can't even imagine. The millenials are not only the future but the present.
Look at the major political leaders and candidates, they are baby boomers and millennials. Generation X is the generation of followers. The baby boomers and the millennial have had impacts.
The presidency will at some point jump from baby boomers to Millennials. It will jump right past generation X.
And no one will care or notice. Generation X is the invisible generation.

Did you know that millennials are also know as late echo boomers? A lot of Gen Xers (early echo boomers) were very busy making little Millennial babies. Of course millennials hate the word boomer, but echo boomers they are.
The internet creation was all baby boomer. Arpanet was established in 1969. The Xers were 4 yrs old. Jeff Besos and Gates are baby boomers.
The generation X is competent, but they ride on the backs of the boomers.
The sad part for the Xers, is that the boomers who have very limited technological skills are promoting millennials over generation X because of their superior technological knowledge .
However, many millennials without the superior technological knowledge are not doing well. But they still are a political and cultural force.
By the way, everyone knows the 80s and the 90's had horrible music.
