Bullying? I don't see it. But I can see how some would take his actions as crass. I was on that end of it from his program, but it was warranted. He was a coach of a national ranked team, not your friend, dad, or therapist. And if your actions were affecting the group, he would see to it to try and get you to shape up or get out.
Ran for Dave for 8+ years. When I stopped, it was due to my own tardiness and lack of respect for the program. Long story short, I showed up to practice late, (again) and he had enough. He wouldn't give me the workout, the team was still warming up, but I was 15 min late. I can see how at the highschool level or even early University years he would cater to it, but I was a post collegiate, and suppose to set an example for others. I was an adult, running in an elite group and he treated me fairly as I was affecting the direction of the group. It wasn't much later when I stopped running as I new it was time for me to move on. At the time, I didn't see it and was mad as hell at him for it. But now a few years later I can see that he was right.
So to those that are calling out Dave for bullying, honestly ask yourself what Dave did to you due to your own disrespect for the program and failure to act like an adult? Were you taking more from the program than you were giving to it? It was an elite team, not an individual based program, and all actions of an individual could affect the direction that the team was going. If someone was pulling it in a different direction, Dave, as a coach, would have to steer the ship back on course. Which could mean cutting the anchor.
As much as I didn't like him at the end of my years with SR, I do look fondly of the memories I had running with him and the group.
Of course there are decisions I am sure he has made that may have been seen as un-empathetic (if that is a word?) or crass, but from all the examples I have heard in the past, they could be argued as decisions he made for the betterment of the team. He was not a therapist, he was a coach, and a damn good one. He pushed me more than any other coach in the past and it is hard to read these hearsay, lynching stories on this message board, without feeling that the treatment of this person is unwarranted (unless there are stories that have not been said).
There is due process, I am sure all the reasons for his leave of absence will be posted once the investigation is complete. Please give it time before you start jumping to conclusions.
