When talking to a non runner about running and if I use the term 'hobby jogger' in the conversation, they understand what I mean by it. But yet runners on here don't, why is that?

Because you are talking to yourself. Try to get out some.
Are there even any real runners in the US? Aren't we all hobby joggers?
....because the so called hobby joggers actually regard themselves as the real runners you refer to and think you are talking about non runners.
If running was like any other sporting structure, the majority would be regarded as 'dabbling in the sport', the odd game here and there.
Real runners do, it’s the group in between them and those that do it as a hobby that don’t, it’s the 15-16min 5km’er or the equivalent for other distance/time the “I train x miles/minutes a week and run at a competitive level crowd, I faster than you” besides then are probably doping anyway... :)
Maybe because there's a spectrum from coach potato to world class athlete, and trying to put an arbitrary line somewhere in between doesn't make much sense?
As a runner I know what a hobby jogger is.
I still don't think it's a nice term. These 'hobby joggers' may only be running 2 or 3 times a week, and they may be doing it for fun rather than competition, but they are still trying.
And obviously a 15 minute 5k dude isnt a hobby jogger , you absolute weapon.
The only non hobby jogger on this site is Sage.

This made me chuckle
We’ve got a hobby president, and even people who hate him don’t call him that. Except me.
The “hobby” part is not offensive, The “jogger” part is. Jogging implies not trying. Change the name to Hobby Runner and no one would take offence. Really quite obvious
True. Friends called Runners World magazine, “Joggers Planet.”

Of course he is. It definitely isn’t his career if he’s running those times. It’s his hobby.

Someone else gets it, it’s a hobby not a profession. Ultimately times are irrelevant. I understand why so people don’t like the term “jogging” though but surely no one it that insecure that it really matters
everyone slower than me is a hobby jogger wrote:

Because everyone who runs thinks they are fast and better than a hobby jogger, even though, unless they are being paid, are a hobby jogger.

If you think you need to dope to run a sub 15 min 5km (as a male) then you're a complete idiot!

For real it is though! Runners World used to be directed more at people who trained to run fast, but sadly now it is about "training" to finish a half or full marathon.
Anyone who has keep at least some physical fitness over the years, or didn't let their body weight run wild (pun intended) would know that finishing a distance even as long as a marathon is not hard. What is hard is going fast.

So then by your definition Mirna Valerio (
http://fatgirlrunning-fatrunner.blogspot.com/) is not a hobby jogger because she makes her money from running?

In my eyes, yeah. If that’s her primary source of income, she isn’t a hobby jogger. It is her profession.
I don’t know anything about who she is but I’m guessing she isn’t very fast. But that is irrelevant: unless your income comes from running, you are a hobby jogger. All of us.
Or hobby runner, if it helps your ego. Same thing.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
