A few years ago Hofbauer moved to Guelph to train with their legendary Canadian team of guys (Reid Coolsaet, Eric Gillis etc), and I saw him race locally a few times. He was incredibly impressive. I watched him roll a 8 miler at -20c and snow and win by about 5 minutes. He always seemed like the real deal to me, but I heard his training just did not fit in Guelph, so he moved back West...
Someone told me he was training incredibly well (and did 10 runs of 40k+ in prep for this race). Can't confirm, but the guy always held promise. He is a huge guy, and looked really bouncy as he ran past me at 41km. He is legit....congrats to him on booking a ticket to the Olympics.
ps....I was on the course....these were PERFECT conditions. 7 Celsius, and completely calm (literally Lake Ontario looked like glass). I have been at the race for 20 years and this was by far the best race day conditions ever. Hence the records on both the men's and women's sides.
