Walking on at Oregon?

You can walk on, just don’t use the doorbell when you get there.

You'll need to be pretty d*mn fast to make it onto the team. You'll need to be at least 4:30/9:30 fast to just even get looked at and even then those times aren't getting you anywhere at Oregon except on the "club" team.

You mean, you don't want him to know what the reality is of the situation at a school like Oregon? You do know that they won't be giving out participation ribbons and trophies at that level, right?

Times like 4:20 and 9:15 would probably be a minimum level. Other factors to take in could be how long they have been running. If you achieved the times you stated on two years of running that's a bit more impressive than a kid who has been running since the 7th grade.

Bollocks. Those are elite high school marks that any/all programs, including Oregon, would welcome and most would fund.

What does it take to walk on? A phone call to the coach with your grades, times and level of desire.

Hate to tell you people who are guessing here, but my son was a 9:10 high school kid with All-American honors in one distance race, and Oregon was not interested even with regard to walking on.

If you are already enrolled and you do ok on the club team and they have a thin spot, you might get lucky, but you can't count on being able to walk on. Oregon has access to the 8:40ish athletes and equivalent foreigners.

They strike me as the kind of team that doesn’t take walk ons. If they’re not contacting you they won’t want you.

They only want the creamiest of the crop. Blue Chippers only. Currently they don’t seem to be too interested in cross country team results. Only track.

1500- Olympic Trials Champ

1500- Olympic Gold

10k- Olympic Silver

If you aren’t doing that they won’t care about how much potential your coach says you have or how big your goals are.

How does this guy make it on Oregon? All I see on TFRRS is a 27min 8k. Who is he?

Not otherworldly, but he did run 15:39 in cross as a senior and did not run track as a senior in 2018, so the track times cited are from his junior year.
