I’m 53. Never run. I decided to sign up for some 5k races. Typically holiday runs or in support of a cause. I’m slow. I don’t run to win. I’m getting slower. It was like running in quicksand last night. Anyone else experience this? I’m in a town on sidewalks. Just bought adidas running shoes. Been at it about a month. I was expecting to get faster. Not to go slower with time.
In the first couple of months, your muscles are still adapting. You're going to be slower than your first run. That's normal. Just keep at it. It will get better.
Just starting out, running every other day is probably about right.
Sidewalks are the worst for injuries. If you can find a park or bike path, that would be easier on your legs and feet for running.
Oh, and just starting, your muscles are going to adapt a lot faster than your tendons and ligaments. That takes a few months so you just need to be patient.
