Hotlanta,
In a feeble attempt to fill Nobby's shoes, I'll tell you that the one shoe Arthur mentioned liking when I saw him last November was the Brooks racer, the T4 or T3, I forget what the number is. The other specific shoe that he mentioned liking that I can recall, was the Mizuno Supersonic, which is now long gone. But if you can remember it and recall how it was built, maybe you can find something like it.
I don't know if you got to look at what Barry Magee ran in when you were in NZ, but he wears very simple, basic, training shoes. That is, something that would likely be sold at a discount store here as a "jogger's" shoe rather than at a running shop. I think Arthur would have recomended something like that as well. The best I've seen lately is the Nike Dart III, though I sort of hate to endorse the Evil Empire. Asics has a shoe called the Legato that is similar though Arthur was not a fan of gel and the Legato has it. The Paw is another shoe that I seem to recall Arthur was ok with, again, except for not liking gel.
The shoes that are most in line with Arthur's tastes are those Japanese Asics that aren't sold here.
Dr. E,
John Molvar put a lot of work and thought into his thesis and I agree with Nobby. It's good. But John did make a few guesses about what Arthur meant and John's guesses didn't exactly agree with Arthur's thinking. This is especially true in the case of hill training, which Arthur never thought should be eliminated.
