I'm glad he did it. Kudos, this is a major feat.
Now people can get over this and see if the REAL world record is possible - sub 2 in an actual bonafide race that isn't a lab experiment.

The cynicism on this place is just remarkable sometimes.
1:57:58 was computed to be the unbreakable human limit (even with perfect shoes), not 1:59:40.

Well, I and many on this site might have heard of that "study", but some how I think 2 hours is more of a magic barrier amongst most casual sports fans, you know, the kind that makes up the vast majority of the viewership.
It was for aerodynamics and reduced drag on Kipchoge. The reason it is called aerodynamic “drag” is because a lot of the resistance you encounter in aerodynamics comes from the low pressure area BEHIND the racer, car etc. essentially pulling backwards. Most people associate aero with breaking the wind in front of him, but the backside aero is just as, if not more important. In a perfect world they would run in somewhat of a teardrop shape with a tapered tail and Kipchoge would be in the middle of the teardrop.

Exactly. I am tired of the science project runs. Wish we could get marathons that have the top 20-30 people in the world in them rather than 2 or 3 of them. That would make kipchoges streak even greater and the sport would increase in popularity too

Please tell me this wasn't an actual line on the broadcast.
Like some starving kid gives a F.... Plus one could argue it would depress him. The African man isused for his labor once again. The Western overlords design something up for him, hand him the tools, etc.
You get to the position of overboard for a reason.
This is true. And there was drafting by both the pacers and the car. But the shoes are the biggest assist.
It all adds up to significantly less energy expenditure than an unaided performance.
They were there to block Lelisa or Tadese if they decided to show up.
Between the new prototype bouncy castle shoes, and no drug testing at the event (meaning he could be on full rocket sauce mode), I’m having a hard time getting excited about this result.
Early 1970’s film with Young Ryan O’Neal where he runs the Marathon at the Olympics and does drugs then crashes. Aboriginal dude wins out sprinting old Russian guy! but in the film there’s a British athlete that goes for sub two hour time and runs the first half in 59 minutes - the film treated it like it was some kind of science fiction fantasy - anyone remember the film????

Could be. I actually teach fluid dynamics and this is true. They weren't right behind him and I wouldn't have thought they were anywhere near close enough to affect the backside, but maybe they were. More likely to affect cross-winds. I'd be curious to see if Nike did wind tunnel testing or CFD modeling of the pacers.
He was so fresh at the end one wonders what if he and started the kick a mile earlier, or 2 miles? Let the pointless speculation begin. I say at least 30 secs faster.
It is like the wind breaker behind the passenger head in a cabrio car. It smooths the air stream above the heads and does not swirl.
The two runners behind kipchoge are very important because they are taking the drag off him.
They studied their aerodynamics better this time.

Did anyone comment on why there were 2 guys running behind him as well?
Wondered that as well. Maybe they were reserves in case one of the front guys had problems and had to peel off. Or maybe they were spotters to make sure Eliud was on his mark.
Read the New Yorker article...a great read. The aerodynamics phd that designed the new formation said the two in the back keep the static pressure at bay to push it enough behind him so it doesn’t have a negative effect pulling at his back.

Wasn't monitoring thread during run, just reading it now. But early on didn't someone, not sure if it was one of the announcers or an interview, say that the two back guys, optimally, should have been running closer together.
I was equating the back two guys kind of like the weird heel on the cheater-flys. Breaking up the turbulance behind Kipchoge, like the earlier guy explained.
Article talks about how much time the drafting, shoes, etc save

That it was done unofficially does take away much of the excitement when it will be done in a race. This is like a hedge for Kipchogue... no matter who breaks it in real competition the masses of idiots who do not understand just how giant the differences in conditions are will argue Kipchogue owns the feat. Clearly Bekele is shape to have run this with him. I feel bad for the guy who does it in a real race, kinda ruined it.
And for anyone who dare argue this is legit and somehow equivalent to Bannister’s, not even close...
Most comprehensive article Ive seen...

Sits on the fence about the shoes abit but it's thiccc with evidence.
Absolutely agree. The unfair wind breaking, pacing, everything. Together with that, they also hype it like a moon landing and people actually buy it. This race is 100% artificial, I’m rooting for Bekele to take him down next year. Not saying Bekele is less likely to be dirty though

Any cyclist...? They are drafting behind a 10ft windshield! Any scientist or normal intuitive person would say, yes, there is likely a huge draft benefit in this case. Likely much bigger than inefficiently drafting behind a bicycle.
This whole event is a stunt that just dilutes the value of real marathon performances perceived by non-runners and the general media. This all comes just after Al Sal's project gets shutdown for being dirty to the core. This whole thing likely includes:
- A large drafting benefit
- Super spring loaded shoes
- The runner and pacers doped to the gills - EPO, Testosterone, Meldonium, Direct Carnitine Injections, Excessive Caffeine, Crack Cocaine.
Maybe it is clean, I don't know; I know is it is going to become more and more difficult for normal people to get excited about marathon breakthroughs that are legitimate.
Newsflash. Normal people don’t give a crap about the marathon now.
