I don’t consider myself to know everything about running, but I’d say I’m a decent runner and the top guy on my team.
(Junior in HS, 4:39, 10:06, 16:54)
I felt that I put in a good summer of training, but have not gone under 17:20 yet this season, which I believe is because of my coach.
My old coach retired for personal reasons, and I’ve had several disagreements with our new coach this season that I was able to deal with, but this saturday was the last straw.
I typically did 30-45 mpw last year but my new coach expected us to double almost every day in the summer and sometimes do 2 workouts a week (which I ignored)
When the season started he was having us do a 7-10 mile “easy run” which he defined as “about 6 minute pace” followed by sprinting across a football field multiple times with almost no rest. We did this for multiple day’s in a row until he told us it was time for our first workout where we did mile repeats almost all out (he told us “if you’re not puking by the end you’re not working hard enough” )
He also told the slower JV kids they’re not allowed to race until they get “more fit”, so many people on my team have not had the opportunity to race yet and are still wondering when or if they’ll get the chance.
I haven’t ran any good times yet and was hoping to last weekend, when we had one of our first larger meets with good competition on a course with little hills. He told me to get out in sub 5:00 (I’ve never started faster than a 5:20) and hang on. I followed his advice for some reason and faded hard, went out in the front and finished with a 17:36. I still medaled but he refused to let me go to awards because I didn’t “run like a winner”.
Every time we run poorly in a meet (which has been every meet) he tries to up the intensity of our workouts which just hurts us more. I’m really not sure what to do at this point, I love cross country but don’t want to continue running for this guy. I feel like my coach knows absolutely nothing about running and I’m not sure what to do. Has anyone dealt with a similar idiotic coaching situation? If so, I am looking for advice.
Thanks
