We noted today on our weekly call that zero athletes from the Bowerman Track Club will be at the Diamond League finals.
We've got an article on that below:
And we get it, the athletes want to do what they think is best to be ready for the World Champs at the end of September.
However, a major problem with our sport is that virtually everything but the World Champs and Olympics can be treated as pre season. Many athletes and clubs solely focus on Worlds and don't feel much international competition is necessary getting ready for Worlds. The Bowerman Track Club is showing that to the extreme this year. Fortunately for fans, other teams like the NOP compete more often internationally.
But we think the sport would be better off if the top stars competed more often, but we don't know the best way to encourage that. One thing we do know is that you our readers are students of the sport and full of good ideas. Instead of just complaining about the system, let's hear your ideas for a better system.
Should there be competition requirements for top ranked athletes to compete at Worlds? The PGA Tour and pro tennis tours require and incentivize athletes to compete throughout the year.
We're going to make this our discussion of the week.
