True, Woody was under no obligation to take the lead, but his cowardice did screw him out of any chance to make the worlds team. You are correct, it was a championship 5k, and by definition that means the only thing that matters is being the top 3 WC eligible places, which was 5th place. Woody was not top 3 eligible , as such 3rd was no better than being last.
Some context. I don't think a lot of people expected Kincaid to place top 3 or hit the world standard. He's been hurt for a while and I'm sure if someone said here that Woody would end up leading and qualify for Worlds then they would probably get chewed out. Hopefully he gains some confidence now that he has placed top 3 at USAs and got some prize money out of it.
Other than that I kind of want to know what was going through some of the minds of the guys in the chase pack that did have the standard. If Chelimo didn't run his own race then the top 3 would've possibly been the worlds team if Lomong and Kincaid ended up hitting the standard. One of the commentators said that Lomong stated that he wouldn't have accepted that entry anyway. He's the real winner in my eyes with earning that $16,000 prize money between winning both the 10k and 5k.
