Here’s the thing. Coaches like Salazar, Julian, Schumacher, Mahon , Coogan, Tracey, Wetmore, Rowland, etc have taken Beast type talent and turned them into great athletes that podium at USAs and sometimes the world stage. Mackey hasn’t done this. Period.
Engels, Thompson, Kincaid, Osako, Houlihan!, Blankenship, Quigley, Hasay, Purrier, Hiltz, Sisson ... I could go on and on - - were no better or worse out of college than what the Beast get year after year. If Brooks wants to keep throwing their money away, so be it, but they are actually doing a disservice to American distance running at the moment by not giving our emerging athletes a quality coach. The verdict is in.
This isn’t about whether Mackey is a nice guy or what have you. He’s a very nice guy who sincerely wants to do right by his athletes and he works tirelessly for them. As another poster wrote, however, if this was any other professional sport, Mackey would have been let go years ago. Time for a fresh start.
