It’s clever how Jared has done it, keeping a complex biography centered around the Trans-Canada run, Al’s high point.

Another theme if the book is the legacy of the hippies, warts & all. A restless, energetic group who certainly made their mark in the running scene.
Like The Pirate character in the book, or Al, or maybe Echo Edmonson; there seemed to be a lot of LSD or schizophrenia there. People like me benefitted from Multiday 2.0, if you will. The originals were unapologetically different. Some of them live on the street to this day.
The book is excerpted today on the Runner’s World website. More mainstream than Al Howie ever was in his eventful life.
Runner’s World UK will carry an Al Howie podcast this Monday 21 October, so Jared told me.
Jared was on fire! He said he thought a lesson from Al was that, if you’re struggling to fit in, running & the running community is something that can help you.
There are now 13 reviews on Amazon now, seems to be doing very well by running-book standards. A lot of the buzz was centered around nostalgia for the days when living off the grid was still easy & even a well-known lifestyle.
“In Search of Al Howie” makes Kirkus Reviews year-end honors list!!!!
Finished it recently....if all that's reported is accurate, the man was clearly an exceptional ultra talent. That he 'marched to the beat of a different drummer' is intriguing, many episodes tilt against windmills of his own imagination. Importantly, thankfully the elusive character agreed to the book and there's a LOT of detail. Crazy, great stuff!
I finished it about three weeks ago. I higly recommend it. I'd get to a point where I would decide to stop reading but then would hang on and do another chapter or two. Howie seems almost a tragic hero and an absolutely amazing runner.
1st Edition sells out in 3 1/2 months! The independent B.C. publisher had never had a first edition sell out in less than a year! Congrats all around.
