Yeah, this is bad. We shouldn’t destroy history. Simply reframing it and explaining it in context seems best.
In Budapest there is this outdoor museum with a bunch of communist era statues and communist memorabilia—Memento Park. There is a lot of explaining and info along with the Statues. They also converted an old communist era secret police station into a museum—it’s called the Terror Museum. Similarly there is a lot of information about the communist era.
I think something like these Hungarian museums would work well in the States for things like this and all the civil war era statues. Just move them to museums and explain their historical significance. The most important lessons we learn are from our mistakes. We shouldn’t erase our mistakes, we should shine a bright light on them lest we repeat them.
