Hard to believe it's been 35 years since the infamous article in "The Runner" magazine, quoting Brooks on why white runners suck:
"Blacks run faster than whites just because they aren't so worried about falling on their faces. Social pressure makes whites stand up straight, and that's why we in the U.S. take spastics as our prototypes of what distance runners should look like."
Admittedly, Tish does little to contradict Brooks's characterization of her as a "bourgeoisie brat" -- I mean, it doesn't seem such a "tragedy" that she had to be in bed before 4:00 a.m. " just so I would have every little ounce of energy the next day to prove Brooks wrong," and it seems a bit hyperbolic to say that running "was the one thing that kept me from . . . selling myself into prostitution" or to suggest that the athletics director may have been a pedophile who "liked our pre-pubescent team too much to notice" that "Stanford never had any upperclassmen on its track teams." But I really enjoy her straightforward description of her feelings about Brooks: "I still hate that man," and "I spit on Johnson's grave. Gladly."
