What an incredibly tenacious and gracious person! She was the person we all hope we could be under those circumstances.
I truly hope I can take her inspiration to heart. RIP Gabe.

The day none of us wanted to see has come, Gabe Grunewald has died.
She was a true inspiration to everyone who knew her story.
I believe life is not measured in how many years we have on the planet, but on the impact we have. And Gabe had such an impact on her family, friends, and world at large. Her memory will live on with all of us.
Her grace, attitude, smile, and love for husband Justin, showed me to how to live.
There was another thread on her end of life care but felt her passing from this earth deserved it's own thread. Please pay your respects here. You can donate to her foundation here if you'd like:

That just plain sucks, had hoped for a better ending. RIP.
I will never forget this young lady and will use her to keep the bad in perspective. My heart goes out to those who knew her.
I haven't posted on LR in a very long time but wanted to pop in to pay my respects to Gabe.
Her bravery and determination should be a lesson to all who fall on hard times, no matter what form it takes, to always keep going and even when it gets too tough the best option is to just push through. Even if you can't lift yourself, lift others.
Her light has shone and will continue to shine for many
Also wanted to add that Justin Grunewald's post on his Instagram story of a photo of Gabe and David Torrence lowkey broke my heart.
May they both RIP
RIP Gabe.
Too Young. RIP

Not that I've seen. I'll post them if the public is invited.
I went to bed sad last night after hearing the news of Gabriele Grunewald's death. I woke up still feeling that way and then read Layden's stories and watched the video on YouTube that Brooks sponsored that detailed her quest to qualify for the 2017 USATF Championships for the 10th or 11th time despite having surgery the year before to remove tumors on her liver...and then having her 2017 season "compressed" due to upcoming chemotherapy to address the reoccurance of her spreading cancer ?
This morning, I felt that there was a recurring theme and that it had already been captured in a hit musical with it's title song. I realize that many of you are much too young to remember it... but you should take the 3 minutes to listen. It's called "To Dream the Impossible Dream."
I tried to find a female singer that had covered it... in honor of Gabe... but kept coming back to this version by Frank Sinatra because it struck a chord with me...and the lyrics are there for you to see... that pretty much mirror Gabe's "quest" with the exception that it refers to a "man" in the lyrics... when it really should say "women" in this particular application.
Anyway, please give this a listen... and then go back and watch the video of Gabe's 2017 "quest" to know that even though this young midwestern woman has left us .... her life was not in vain .... but that she did, indeed, "run... where the brave dare not go" and that her exemplary life example will live on far longer than her athletic career results.
Gabe was a true inspiration to so many she would never know. Her attitude and will to fight reminded me of a line from Dr. Daniels' book about racing tactics (paraphrased from memory): When struggling, speed up.
R.I.P. Gabe.
Love and condolences to family and friends.
