Here is an example of Kilian complaining of running too much on "runnable" courses. In his book, which obviously you have not read, he does not call himself a runner, says he had poor track results as a youth/teen, and that he is more of a mountaineer, speed ascender, outdoorsman.
To the people comparing Mt. Washington and this race Kilian ran, you cannot compare. Mount Washington takes much more power as the avg. grade is 12% over 12km of racing high winds, road, dirt. Kilian race is closer to 6% grade the entire way, double the distance, not as much power needed, but great aerobic. Yes, Kilian does avoid the road running races like Mount Washington, as they have offered to fly him out as they did with Jono Wyatt, some Kenyans, and Italians.
"Around mile 44, Kilian recalls that he became frustrated by the fact that the race forced him into so much running as he was more accustomed to European races where he hiked more, “As you know, Western States is relatively flat and my legs were not used to so much running. So, to break the monotony, when we got to the first canyon, I moved to the front and ran the downhill very fast."
