Dang, this had the potential to be a good thread until these crotchety old men went on weird anti-millennial diatribes. Guess what guys? These millennials that you hate are no different than the emo kids you used to rip on in the 80s for listening to Joy Division. Nothing has changed, everything is the same.
Not totally true. Millennials are across the board more educated and more productive.

Actually he was pretty nice about this.
He used a wish-washy term so you can write him off as a loser and not feel bad.
He could have lit into you for all your flaws.
Non-confrontational is not the same thing as nice. A nice person fulfills their contractual obligations, or at least gives as much notice as possible if they are going to fail to do so. Finding a subletter would have been "nice."
I don't really care that he dislikes me. I care that he's costing me money, or at least costing me whatever time it will take to recover the money.
Great now we know the BroJos will kowtow to any external power asking for identifying surrounding the users here. Let's check their remarkably incomplete privacy policy: "Even when you do not login to post on our forums understand we track a) your ip address and b) set a cookie. From those things it may be possible to figure out who you are. In order to stop spammers and maintain a forum where we can ban problematic users we do not give you the option of us not tracking those things. If you want to remain anonymous to LetsRun.com, don’t post on our forums or register on our site." I vote you add the line: We may share your location data with others on the forums as we see fit (for humor, to stroke our egos, or to try confirm our weird preconceptions). For admittedly right-leaning, libertarian folks you sure are hypocritical about privacy/autonomy. If you want people to come to Letsrun with interesting news/speculation/leaks you might want to shore up your principles ;)

Pretty sure you don't know what doxxing means.
We can argue about what "very little" means. Rojo disclosed the location (city) of a user from their IP. Yes there are plenty of ways to obfuscate location data from IP data. Nevertheless, for some such disclosure would be unacceptable. It is responsible for the admins of a website to warn people if their locations will be disclosed without prior warning. Maybe these actions even violated EU privacy law; hopefully LRC won't be blacklisted in Germany!

His site his rules. The lrc staff can probably identify every visitor and you better believe they know who the most hardcore trolls are no matter the usernames and IP addresses used.
All you coaches better play nice.
you can still sue for rent in small claims. This person does not need to be named on the lease. Be prepared with counter for "not feeling safe"
Try mediation
I have no issue with your roommate bolting from you for whatever reason. That is no reason for you to disparage your generation. But your outrage is misplaced.
The real thing that puzzles me is (1) he thinks it ok not to meet his financial obligation and (2) you seem more upset about his reason rather than the fact he basically lied and left you with the bill.
I wouldn't sweat it bro. Your parents generation already got that job done.

Oh. Well in that case, I suggest you to sue him or at the very least tell him he's a huge pvssy.
WHen someone says pvssy, my feminist friend said to think, "Warm and moist." Seriously, why do you use a term for female genitalia to refer to weakness? Find a better word.
Weird. Easily the most awkward comment you've made.
Like, who even comments on something like that? wtf?
people break leases all the time
this isn't news
I hope you get your money back
Where I come from, we call this stealing. Criminals almost always try to find a way to blame someone else. Don’t sugar coat this imo. If he hadn’t used this specific excuse, he would have just invented another.
Bad news: You got scammed by a con artist.
Good news: Said con artist is now out of your life and can go make other people miserable instead of you.
Getting this idiot out of your life is definitely worth $2000. Rejoice!
Kid knows you're gay and thought you guys would at least hook up once in a while. Turns out you're pretty deep in the closet still. Now he wants out of this nightmare.

Wow you are actually doing a gay put down. I know they were popular in the 1990's but didn't know anyone still did them!

What does he mean when he says that he doesn't feel safe? Am I hurting him? Threatening him? Is he worried that I am going to steal from him? Nope. He doesn't feel 'safe' because he feels that he cannot "live his authentic self" in our current living situation, and this has been "traumatic" to him. And so he moved his stuff out while I was on a weekend vacation and told me that he will not be paying his share of the rent for the last two months of the lease.
What is it with my generation that makes people think 1) being uncomfortable is equal to being "unsafe," and 2) mild discomfort (of the sort that anyone experiences when living with another person) is tantamount to "trauma"?
He should be glad he wasn't my room mate, in my younger years. He'd be in an insane asylum by now.

Where have you been hiding the last 20+ years? Gay people do them all the time.
Too late. Baby boomers already destroyed this country and are now dead set on destroying the world. By the way, this sensitive behavior is far better than "step in", "move aside", "we're the best country in the world", yada yada yada. We are one earth and the baby boomers are in the process of destroying it with their "profit at all costs" mentality.

I know this will be shocking for you, given how homophobe this place is, but... maybe you should sit down for this one...
I'm gay.
He only stated the traumatic part so if you or the landlord take him to small claims court for the broken lease then he can have a firm reason to say the broken lease is valid and he doesn't owe anyone anything. No court will rule that someone has to be forced to live in a traumatic house. So, even though it wasn't traumatic and realistically he just wanted to leave for completely unrelated reasons, he set himself up to avoid any litigation.
That said, you should keep his security deposit. He could take you to small claims court via the same logic as above, but odds are he won't.
