The fact the the USATF hasn't gotten a waiver from the IAAF to declare the top 3 at the Marathon Trials have the marathon standards is absurd.
The reality is the rules were set after people had already made their marathon plans for the spring and after the Trials were picked on a hilly and potentially hot locale.
The reality is the IAAF's top competitions can often produce slow winning times. So just because 3rd place in Atlanta may not be inside the standard doesn't mean that they didn't run an exceptional race. It will be a shame if they don't go to the Olympics.
The at the Bank of Lanzhou Cup Lanzhou International Marathon - an IAAF gold race - the winning times were quite slow.
Ethiopia’s Worknesh Edesa , who ran 2:21:05 in Dubai this year, won the women's race in 2:31:22
Kenya’s Justus Kimutai, who has a 2:09:29 pb, upset a strong Ethiopian contingent to win the men’s race in 2:11:47.
