I think I have Achille' tendonitis. my achilles is swollen and it hurts whenever my shoe touches it. my question is how dangerous is it to run with it? i have a big race on friday and i really don't want to skip it! is there a chance that i could rupture it or do you think it'll be ok? Thanks!
Chance are that it will NOT rupture. I would not even worry about that. I would worry about it getting worse. I am the king of achilles injuries. I get them oven. Try ice/heat treatments and heat it up really well before your race. Take some anti-inflam and when the race is over stretch really well. After that I would go to the weight room and use weight to really stretch it out (ecentric (sp) exercises) those will help. I have ended up getting injections in both tendons because I have to race to live, but that is not good for you and many dr's wont do it. good luck and i hope that you run fast.
I have also had ongoing achille's problems. I agree with everything been there has said.
Take anti-inflammatories, stretch really well, ice, and use weight training for strengthening.
this article summarizes one of the only randomized trials for treatment of achilles tendonitis. in the original aticle published in the "american journal of sports medicine", there was a 100% recovery rate for the group doing the exercise described. the average age of the subjects was 40 which means that younger people should be able to get results more quickly
achillies problems just came suddenly for me, i took a day off and it stills hurts? It feels like a bruise on my tendon. It hurts to walk around, could this be something else? It just came on really suddenly too? Please help
That is a great link posted and I am a big believer in those exercises. One thing to note though is that you should be painfree when you are doing them. If your achilles is swollen then you might need to go for some physical therapy and take some time off the allow the inflammation to calm down enough so that the strengthening will not aggravate things.
