I work a cush job in marketing at a relatively small organization (~50 employees) where I am part of a 3 person marketing team. I am more the digital marketing/technical side and the other 2 guys are more branding/communications.
My wife works a cush teaching job.
My income is $45500 and she is $42000. Our rent is $1380 for a decent 2 bedroom near the beach (we live in Seattle). We got lucky with this rent (long story). Not high wages but given our rent and DINK status we're living the charmed life in our early 30s. We don't have much money saved - a little in retirement funds, a little in savings (approx. 75k total)
Our dream/goal is to have kids (2) 3 years from now AND continue to live in the same beautiful (but expensive) city.
The only solution I can envision, where my kids don't grow up in poverty, is to have one of us earn A LOT more income. This is probably going to have to be me (My job is chill and nice but I don't really care about it that much whereas my wife loves her teaching job).
Since we live in Seattle, and I have a little technical prowess/digital marketing background, I figure the best bang for my buck and most pragmatic path would be software development. I also considered data science/analysis and aim at some marketing analytics type jobs but it seems that most of these require coding knowledge anyway and there are a lot more Full Stack Developer opportunities.
The 2 routes I've been considering for the past several months are:
1 - take part-time courses, bootcamps, learn on the side for 3-4 years (approx. 10-20 hours a week after work) OR
2 - save up $40k over the next 2 years and take a year long intensive program
I'm posting for thoughts on letsrun as I really like this forum and appreciate the group knowledge, feel there are a fair few software people here, and tend to be in my own little myopic mind bubble about the only solution to this upcoming kids challenge (and no, having no kids is off the table).
Thoughts? Am I missing something? Am I seeing the most logical solution or stuck in my own world on this one?
