Hughes' record-breaking performance actually has a huge effect on me.
I decided I wanted to get a 70% age-graded performance at 5K, 10K, Half and Full so at age 56 this year, I've already done that for the 5K, 10K and Half from January 31 to March 27. I'm using the single-age WRs to do the calculations.
For the marathon, I'm holding off until age 57, because there is a huge drop-off in the WR from age 56 to 57 (something like 2:27 to 2:33, which means my targets were 3:30:07 and 3:38:51 (and I'm waiting for the latter).
But if Hughes really did break the record, all of a sudden that 3:38:51 will be adjusted down to something like 3:35 (which I was targeting anyway, but now I don't have the cushion of the 3:38:51 as a backstop).
The previous record had stood for 20 or 30 years, too.
