He has a good point and is probably right. Hell, Bill Rodgers ran 2:09 just shy of 45yrs ago.

I have to agree with Meb. You can do your runs too easy. At my best I was just under 54:00 for 10 miles and my average 10 mile workout was 6:10 to 6:30 pace. Elite level marathoners can run 6 minute miles all day long
Not that I know anything about running a sub 2:10 marathon but I love how Meb didn't go for a cliché answer. To all those emphasizing "easy days easy," that is good advice for 90% of high school and college runners who tend to go too fast. But Meb is talking about a specific class of runners and he knows what he's talking about.
So is Jared award going to be the next American under 2:10? His “easy” days are 5:30-6:00 pace but he usually only runs 6 days a week (but 110-115 in those 6 days).

Jared Ward is a bit underated. He's had a great mentor in Ed Eyestone.
Ward is Men lite. wrote:

Except meb used a 9 day cycle when he ran his best marathons. Not a 6 day cycle. Lack of recovery from hard efforts is another factor for the lack of sub 2:10 marathoners in the US. Look at the training of a 2:06 Japanese marathoner training(about the same time frame from his marathon as ward is in that link):
September 1
Morning 60’ jog AM 40k (2:24’19″) PM Walk total 55 kilometres
September 2
Morning 60’ jog AM 60’ jog — total 24 kilometers(5 minute kilometer is about a 8 minute pace)
September 3
Morning 60’ jog. AM 60’ jog. PM Walk total 24 kilometres
September 4
Morning 60’ jog. AM 2 x 5k (15’02″/14’52″) PM Walk Total 34 kilometres
September 5
Morning 60’ jog — PM 50’ jog total 22 kilometres
September 6
Morning 60’ jog AM 120’ jog PM Walk
Total 38 kilometres
September 7
Morning 60’ jog — PM 65’ jog
Total 25 kilometres
September 8
Morning 60’ jog AM 60’ jog — Total 24 kilometres
September 9
Morning 60’ jog AM Walk PM 50’jog + 400 (71″) + 2x1000 (3’01″/2’58″)
Total 29 kilometres
September 10
Morning 60’ jog AM Walk PM 25k (1:20’11″)
Total 44 kilometres
Notice, he jogs his easy days. And even does walking. And the time between his workout. September 1 he did a long tempo run. His next workout wasn't till September 4th. His next workout after that wasn't till Sept 9th. And his next workout after that wasn't till Sept 15th. Recovery is way underrated in the U.S.
http://bobhodge.us/running-logs/takayuki-inubushi/how about we look at the REAL Japanese record holder, Suguru Osako who is with the NOP which the group is known to run their easy run at least 6 min pace or faster.... Also Jordan Hasay going quick on easy runs has reached her to a whole another level in the marathon. the only problem is can she stay healthy?
4% cheating shoes weren't around when Takayuki Inubushi ran his marathon PB. And NOP is a little bit suspicious to put it nicely.
From Meb's book he wasn't running easy run any faster than 6:10-6:15 pace. This is perfectly reasonable for his caliber . At the same time top Kenyans often run easy runs super slow in comparison, 7:30 pace or slower. Seems that different methods work for different people. I used to run my easy days in 6:20 to 6:30 with the last few often in 6:10-15. Now I'm usually more in the 6:45-50 range. Has not made a noticeable difference in my racing or workouts.

What most folks don't get is that every one is different.... no exact or magic way to be great.
I know guys who hammered every day ... mega miles. I know guys who took easy days easy and ran far fewer miles.... gotta find what works for you.
Btw, what's "wrong" and why there aren't American sub 2:10 guys is more about socio-economics than anything else... far less about how slow/fast your easy days are
This talk about " every one is different" must come to an end when we talk about running improvement and best ways to reach your optimal performance. There is no evidence of such a claim.
Please keep humouring us with how big of an idiot you are!

The thing with my statement is of course not a denial of genetics. But we are all more similar than different when it comes to the function of the cardio vascular system witch is very crucial when we talk about running results and best ways of training. The more knowledgeable and familiar with this here understood probably what I ment , while the more slow-minded people lacked the ability and knowledge to interpret the message from a different perspective. People here that anonymous are quick to call others for idiots and virtually .

As opposed to, maybe, calling someone slow minded, right?
