There will be far fewer chances to qualify for the 5000 at the Olympics. Eliminating the 5000 at the Olympics is next.
Extremely doubtful. The Olympics has almost zero recent history of eliminating events within long established popular sports. They add sports or tinker with competitor numbers and sometimes drop entire sports. But the list of dropped events is only large from a century ago when things were being figured out. In recent decades it's next to nothing.
There had been talk of dropping the 10,000 from the Olympics. But in Rio they started experimenting with finals during the morning session. I remember that with the steeplechase. No reason that can't be implemented with more events. The Diamond League can't have a separate morning session for annoying events but the Olympics has room to maneuver. Besides, the Olympics get the 10,000 out of the way quickly for men and women early during the track and field window, and without a heat. I have no idea why that race is causing any problems. Basically the only thing it does is force the 5000 into very late in the Games since so many competitors attempt both the 10,000 and 5000.
Swimming is going to face the same thing, now that men's and women's will have 800m and 1500m on the schedule. Far less flexibility. The swimming practice in the Olympics is to get the 400 individual medley out of the way on the first day, since it is considered the most taxing event and top athletes need time to recover for the rest of their program.
