Photo finish photo shows how the slightly earlier fall by Parks' made the difference. While her hips were clearly further back, her torso was just slightly ahead of Starliper's. Without the fall, she would have gotten second.

Wow athletic.net promoters out in full force. I think it's cute so I will play along
That was the race of the day. The winner was very lucky and should make sure she stays a little farther away from a runner she is passing.
Agree, Parks did seem to drift back into Starliper's path a bit on the final straight, which caused the contact. I tend to doubt it would have changed the final outcome though.
I would disagree. Park's collision with Starliper is exactly what caused the pair to fall. If she had not nudged herself into Starliper, Parks never would have fallen and she would've taken second.
What are everyone's thoughts on the legality of Parks nudging Starliper on the home stretch (maybe four strides from the finish)?
You're right that the bump ultimately caused her to fall forward to outlean Starliper, but she was already gaining on Marlee. Parks lost momentum. Without the contact I think she would have simply beat her to the line cleanly.
It's an interesting rivalry because Starliper tends to dominate during the season and get all the attention, but it seems like Parks peaks really well and is able to pull off an "upset" like this with a huge PR. Starliper clearly better at XC whereas Parks has the superior top-end speed. The mile is a great matchup distance for them.
That's an excellent point. I never considered Park's initial momentum prior to the contact. Consider me convinced!
