PBR = Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Really? You just ran your personal record? Your slow-a$$ time is in no way a constituent to any sort of record, so just call it a personal best! Imagine someone telling you they just ran a season record, LOL!
This is the American equivalent of the imperial vs. metric system, get with it or get out brochaski.
Oh Lordy...please don’t kiss your own azz b/c you think highly of yourself ?
It is called a figure of speech
Let me say at the outset that the OP does not have a valid point to make and should not have even started this thread. Looks like he's looking for another lame excuse to tell people they're jerks. Surely he could have found a better one.
PR preceded PB in the running lexicon. It seemed entirely sufficient. I am old and set in my ways and see no reason to change. Actually, I've often read PB but I've never heard anyone say PB out loud. Do whatever makes you happy.

I thought it was PR of it was 5000 but PB if a 5k. Please make sure you educate us all on proper lingo.
Definitely one of the most idiotic threads I've seen here.
I think the brunette chick is hotter.
I've only ever heard middle-aged couch-to-5k runners use PB.
I ran in high school and college and PR was always the vernacular.
This thread is g*y.

After commenting about the number of posts on this thread responding to an idiotic PB is better than PR, I suggested a better topic would be the Mary Ann vs Ginger which even hotly debated for over 50 years, but there has not been a response.
All though obviously high maintenance, Ginger was smoking hot and had a body that makes SFH's look boyish. Mary Ann was cute and slightly chubby. With Mary Ann you would have a great cook who would enthusiastically take on all the household chores. Ginger wouldn't even try.
Polls have shown a 3 to 1 preference for Mary Ann.

Here's Ginger exercising her 2nd Amendment rights:
https://goo.gl/images/L96evYUseless topic.
I used PR. My training partner...US 5k holder used PR
It is probably a colloquial influenced choice of terms at best.
Perhaps your best times would be quite fascinating but your choice of pb vs pr is not interesting. Another wasted time spent on drivel.
The preceding word describes the following word. The adjective "personal" describes the noun "record" in more detail, as it becomes clear in compounds like "world record" or "city record" what kind of record it is. Who cares if someone writes in the internet "personal best" or "personal record"?
Personal Best was used in the US more often in the 70's and 80's. I heard a few runners use that term then but would hear it much more from journalists though than actual decent runners.
There was even a movie entitled 'Personal Best' that came out in 1982 starring Mariel Hemingway about a female olympic track athlete who wanted to make it to the olympics (and also figure out her own sexuality.....)
As for the Mary Anne v. Ginger subplot in this thread: Why not take them both? :).
High school XC runner from California here. We all say PR here. Nobody says PB.
I submit one could run a PB without a PR.
Example: Is Des Linden winning Boston in garbage weather a PB since she gutted it out?
Example: Is Centro’s gold medal run his PB?
If you say no to those, I can say that what I consider my personal best race was definitely not my PR.
That being said, I think they are generally often used interchangeably depending on which you heard first and most often.

You have clearly put some thought into this. Why?
I just call them WRs

Because its a PERSONAL record, not a world record, not a course record, not a national record. a PERSONAL record. which is the exact same thing as saying its your PERSONAL best. not the all time best, not the best in your country, a PERSONAL best.
ITS THE SAME THING
I agree, but personally.....
If it’s not an IAAF recognized event, then I say personal best. If it’s an IAAF recognized event, then I say personal record. If it’s Pabst Blue Ribon, then I sometimes say PBL, but usually say Pabst. If it’s peanut butter, then I say peanut butter.
What do swimmers say? Triathletes? Auto racers? Golfers? Punters? Field goal kickers?

Only if you are in the right weight category. All my PB's are World Records for my height and weight. My height is 6'0.

If you actually say the words, "personal best" sounds better than "personal record", but regardless, that was one crappy movie. Wasn't there a scene of Kenny Moore taking a leak?
