If you read Running with the Buffaloes, you see Goucher running about a hundred a week in singles.
Ed Whitlock did high mileage in singles.
Funny you mentioned that, currently in the middle of the book. Dont spoil it!

Fake news. 20 kilometres broken in to two 10 kilometer runs are way easier than a single 20 kilometer run.
I don't think he's saying that it is actually more work/physically stressful. Everyone knows 2 x Z miles is easier on you than 2Z miles. But I think he means that the second run feels like it is taking up more of your day. I mean, you would have to go before and after work, shower twice, use another set of workout gear, etc. At least for me, doubles seems more mentally taxing than a long single because at least once I finish the single, I'm just done as opposed to having to run again later.
Yes that’s what I mean. It’s just so much extra time to run twice rather than running all at one time
Yuki "the goat" Kawauchi does almost exactly this and it seems to work well for him.

Technically he runs three times a day. Once in the morning. Than he gets ready for work and runs less than a mile to work and a less than a mile back after work.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/04/sports/yuki-kawauchi-marathon.htmlAlready that morning, he had put in 12½ easy miles, looping through a city park
A short time later, Kawauchi was off running again down an asphalt path, wearing a dress shirt, slacks and brown leather shoes. Work started in a few minutes. His office was less than a mile from home. He could time it just right.

What's to spoil? That is a true story of events which happened 20 years ago. Anyway, that was Goucher's summer mileage and that fact is at the very beginning of the book.
My personal program is 90 or under is always in singles. I don't see the need to go to doubles until 100+. I saw guys in college doing 70 a week with 5 doubles. That was ridiculous and they never developed any strength.
Yeah it's exactly these 1500s in casual clothing that make Yuki as good as he is.

guess 90 +35 = 125
he was assuming we would be using the North Dakota nine day week.
cheers.
I'm currently experimenting with a high mileage training regimen (all in singles) and it's been working out pretty well for me. Here are two examples of training weeks I've recently completed:
14-11-17-11-11-12-14 = 90 mile week
20-11-13-11-16-11-13 = 95 mile week
My 11-mile days are "easy" days. I'm running a very comfortable pace, but just doing it for a longer duration than in my low-mileage days. The days over 11 miles are moderate runs, long runs, and/or workouts. Workouts include fast-finish long runs, long tempo runs, and long intervals.
My body has responded well to this sort of training. The key is being able to recover while doing 11-mile easy days. While it is definitely doable, it really comes down to how your body specifically responds to the high mileage.
Best of luck!
