He is running the Herculis 5k road race in Monaco. Weather looks almost perfect, 13C, sun and a light breeze. Although he ran 59'13" in Ras, Julien said he was a little disappointed by the pacemakers and had they done a perfect job he believed a sub 59 could have been done, nevertheless, he also said he has much higher ambitions than the 'mere' 59'13". For the Sunday race he reckons a new PR of 13:10-13:15 would please him for the moment. Thoughts?
10 days after he broke the ER, Julien Wanders is at it again. He thinks it could be yet again a new ER.

The European Record is set by Alistair Cragg, 13:24. It might be in real jeopardy on Sunday
-
Hopefully he is getting his "glow time" right. Or at least keeps enough "tea money" available on a drop-by basis.
-
If Kipchoge and Farah can get their glow times right and stay away from testers skillfully, along with dozens of other E. Africans, surely a bright Swiss kid could as well.
-
He'll leave everyone in awe again. I say 13:09 for the win, flawlessly.

He must have terrible racing skills then. 3 people beat him, he can't keep up with runners competing with him but with pacemakers he could? Sorry I don't buy that, it's also very arrogant to blame his pacemakers when he showed he couldn't have gone faster because there were several people that beat him with marginally better times. -

He means the pacemakers did not run even splits and went out too slow and too uneven. -

First thing I thought as well. The pacemakers did a fine and dandy job for those who did break 59 but not a well enough job for him to break 59? Very silly thinking. -
Why does he run all these silly road races? Does he win anything? He seems to have finished way off the medals in the European Championships last Summer.

You must be an idiot, be envious, or a complete non-running fan not to know that Wanders won a big road 10k in which he got the ER. It was on Letrun.
For the idiot above you, Wanders is an up and coming young runner. He likely geared up for this and his strength lies in even paced races. He will likely adjust and get better. What you fail to realize is that there were 20+ cream of the crop E. African runners and Wanders in a large group midway. Only two of those managed to go under 59 with that erratic pacing. Idiots! -

He’s not wrong and he also isn’t ragging on anyone. He acknowledges not being able to go with the leaders in the second half. Don’t read into it too much...
... now if you wanna listen to someone really complain about pacing you should look up Mo Farah’s interview after the 2015 Pre Classic 10k. What a piece of work! -

Those "cream of the crop" E. African runners were obviously not actually cream of the crop if a poorly paced Wanders beat them to the finish. -

Actually they are. It's just that Wanders can now beat the cream of the crop. In a similar way that Jake Robertson beat the cream of the crop in last years Houston. That's unless you feel "cream of the crop" is one or two runners instead of the top 1% of pro runners. In which case that really wouldn't be just cream of the crop...it would be the cherry on top of the cream...or basically world record holders... -

Fair enough. Nice points. -

First 5k was ~14:10. I kind of agree with him. -
He did beat Kipchumba, who is one of the younger Kenyans who ran 59:06 last year, which put him on the top 25 of all time list at the time.
Also beat Walelegn the Ethiopian and the other Kipchumba who had better half times last year even though they are also up and coming runners. Also beat Kiptoo and Lelisa Desisa who also were not able to PR. -
Oh, and forgot Alex Korio. Yes, Wanders beat a 58:51 runner from a year or two ago.

I knew about his European 10k road record. I'm not familiar with the Corrida Pédestre Internationale de Houilles. What happened to him in the European Championships? Does he not train/race well in the heat? Does he have a marathon coming up? World Championships on the track? I'm just curious about the guy. He seems to be in the mold of a b-level Kenyan chasing money around the European road circuit. it is not conventional. -
You forgot that he beat Okombo. Yes, that Okombo 58:48 that challenged Cheroben in that 2017 Copenhagen race.

Just out of curiosity, who is an A-level Kenyan to you? Is it more than one runner?
