There are plenty of clubs in the area. I dont recall specifically the names, but I know many meet at Northeastern, MIT and/or Harvard. If you do hook up with a running group make sure you say hi to Marky, Ricky, Danny, Terry, Mikey, Davey, Timmy, Tommy, Joey, Robby, Johnny, and Brian.

Relocating to Boston this summer and need to know which running club to join. I run approx. 30-40 miles per week mostly at 7-7:30 pace. Try and do one tempo run a week, one speed workout per week and maybe a 12-14 mile long run on weekends. Will be training for the MCM marathon on oct. 30, 2005. I will be living in the City (SouthEnd) behind Copley Sq. Any suggestions on running routes and clubs would be most appreciative. Not only looking for running/training partners but clubs that not only train/run hard at times but also like to have some good fun and fellowship and throw a cold one down occasionally --- Thanks !!
There ware a few options depending on where you want to go and how often you want to meet with teammates. Greater Boston may be a good choice for someone with your credentials, but that tends to be a younger crowd. You could also look at the somerville road runners, i don't know how often they meet, but they seem to have an older group and are more geared to the longer distances and road races. DOn't know how old you are though??
Those might be your best, most local options. There is also a group that runs from the Marathon Sports store (they have a website- you can google it) I know they do this from the one in wellesley, and i think the one in brookline as well (which would be closer for you). That isn't so much a club, but just people getting together to run with others, which is always good.
When are you making the move?
In the immediate Boston area for road running, here are the real biggies:
Greater Boston Track Club -
--------------------------------------------------------
This is the club that gave us Bill Rodgers and a host of other great runners. They do a lot of track racing and road racing. They're coached by Tom Derderian, a 2:20 marathoner. All the members I know personally seem like fairly cool people.
Somerville Road Runners -
-----------------------------------------------------
This is my club. About 400 members. We lean more towards road races and relays than track races. We have many marathoners (66 members did Boston this year). We host 4 road races every year around the area. We have thursday night runs from Khoury's Bar in Somerville, weekly track workouts at Tufts on Tuesday evenings, group long runs on weekends, and a couple of other fun-runs during the week. I think this is the most fun club in the area but I'm obviously biased.
L Street Running Club -
------------------------------------------------------
These guys run out of South Boston. They have many, many members (I don't know how many). Their hosted long runs (for fall and winter marathons) are superbly organized. They put on a 5 mile road race in Southie every year
Boston Athletic Association -
-------------------------------------------------------
The club that puts on the Boston Marathon. They have some seriously high-quality runners. I have to admit I don't know much about them as a running club. I just know that just about every time I see someone in a BAA singlet, they're faster than I am.
Cambridge Sports Union -
-----------------------------------------------------
This club is based out of Cambridge, MA but has members all over. I admit I don't know much about them but I know a few of their members. I always see them at the road races and at many of the local all-comer's track meets. Good people.
There are some excellent teams from the surrounding suburbs, including
- Greater Lowell Road Runners -
- Merrimack Valley Striders -
-
- Central Mass Striders -
- Whirlaway -

There are many more as well. You can find links to them on this web page
