It's possible the juvenile was very hungry because of the recent snowstorms in winter and was less than 50 pounds.
I'm smarter and more reasoned than you are, so let's get that straight.
Average weight of a male lion at this stage is 80 lb. Winter hasn't been so terrible there, and the deer are thick in numbers, and no major die-offs. Not like a harsh winter in the high country when half the herd starves out.
Moreover, the CPW officials said they can't get an accurate weight because the carcass had already been fed upon by the time they had found it. But they could probably get a reasonable estimate based on what they have, bone size measurements and body fat/soft tissue indices.
