In reply to this on your other comment, I know other Dylan songs are more overt in their references and setting. But "Visions" is sufficiently abstract to avoid direct interpretations and really captures a lot of that timeless, NYC hipster ethos which evokes strong nostalgia in any who ever spent time there as a young person. Good thread so far, hearing some of these for the first time.

Why is Visions of Johanna about New York City? Sure Dylan was the “quintessential New York hipster” from ‘63-‘66, but besides maybe a mention of a ‘D’ train, which runs in many cities, I can’t for the life of me figure why Visions of Johanna is “about New York City.” Then there’s that mention of Mona Lisa inside the museums...seems rather Parisian to me.

Being a West Coast guy I admit to lacking any credibility when it comes to commenting on New York City. I've only been there once so my impressions are mainly from movies and TV. However, when I listen to 'Visions of Johanna' the images it evokes are of a group of friends, late at night in New York, maybe 1 or 2 AM, laying around in some artist's loft high on acid ("the ghost of 'lectricity howls in the bones of her face" is the best description of acid I've ever heard. I dropped acid a dozen times in the late '60s.)
That said, "Waiting For My Man" by the Velvet Underground is a clear #1. "Hey white boy what you doing uptown, you chasing our women around? No, pardon me sir this bread is for my mind..." "...the first thing you learn is you always got to wait..." Not sure if I got the lines exactly right. Drawing on an old memory.

That was my choice.
I decided to add my #2, which hasn't been mentioned. PJ Harvey - You Said Something
