How does somebody listen to an audiobook? I’m not saying that I think it’s stupid, but I couldn’t possibly take in everything by hearing as opposed to reading.

Audiobooks are beyond fantastic.
Listen to a great book while doing any number of things, includinging boring chores.
Audiobooks + Long Drives = Fantastic
Anyone try listening to an audiobook while running?

I don't try anything, I just do it.

I've listened to a few during long drives. Definitely not the same experience as properly reading the book, but better than listening to top 40 music or talk radio.

I used to feel the same way until I had a year with a very long commute. I can't really answer your question well, except to assure you that your concern is unfounded.
Feeling the way you did but needing a break on my commute, I started with a non-fiction book. Then I got into fiction. I listened to many books that year but the best of all was Moby Dick; that book is so poetic that I now can't imagine reading it. All I can suggest is that you give it a try - you'll probably be surprised.

It's not the same experience, I agree. Sometimes audiobooks are a much better experience, especially if the author is reading himself or there is a little added production quality to the audiobook. Also when the narrator does a good job with dialogue in a good novel. I love it.

It's really simple. I don't try to listen to it, I listen to it.
