I have won precisely 6 races in my lifetime, and I don't consider myself that great a runner.
#1 High school senior year - 5 team pre season scrimmage. Won the 2 mile
#2 Junior college - Freshman year. Won a steeplechase with me and 1 other guy. The other guy sucked. One of my slowest steeples ever
#3 NCAA D2 level - won the slow heat of a 1500 at our home invitational. Kicked hard for 800 after a really slow first 700. Really proud of that one
#4 Won a road race 5k while in grad school. Time not super fast but good enough to beat the high school kids
#5 Won a turkey trot while in grad school. Actually a not bad time on a kind of difficult 4 mile course
#6 Won a road 10k while training for my one and only marathon. There were maybe 600 runners and I ran a pretty decent time, even by lame local road race standards.
So, I'm guessing the number of racers who have run at least 1 race in their lifetimes is not too small.
