Definitely go to the school that will set you up for the rest of your life first. Or at least the school you like the most. Then the running is next. With your times you don't have to worry about not being able to be accepted on the team, most D3 schools don't really have hard standards anyway and have very big roster sizes compared to D1 schools. With your times on that low of mileage, why not try increasing the mileage a little bit and see what you can really do? Who knows, you could be really good and get down to sub 5 in the mile and maybe get big scholarship money to a D2 school or less competitive D1 school. Going from 15-20 miles per week to 30-35 miles per week over a few months will do wonders for you.
Big scholarship money at a D2 requires 4:25. Scholarship at a D1 requires 4:20. Don’t mislead the kid. He is on the right track with d3.
