Coaching is unhealthy because coaches are suckers for myths that lead to terrible disappointment:
-climbing the ladder of coaching jobs is dead, so you are probably stuck where you are or out of coaching by choice if you didn’t start high on the ladder.
-administrative support doesn’t ever get better, even with success——do well?, great keep doing it with same or less.
-head coaches don’t need super qualified hero coaches —- they need good people with decent personalities that won’t jump ship in two years, maybe keep them for 4 instead
-athlete loyalty is fleeting —— more and more see the grass is greener and leave even if you’ve been busting your ass for them for years (aka putting up with their sh$t). Lots of midmajor kids would kill just to make a their favorite power5 team.
-every other sport will get increased support before you, if you get any you wait longest. And your athletes notice and resent you and admin
-balancing your marriage and family is super hard. Look around and notice all the divorced coaches and forever single coaches without kids. Not a lot of people in the game long enough to raise multiple kids through it.
There’s exceptions to all these, but it’s real. Accept it. Complaining on here doesn’t help. Otherwise, coaching is awesome.
