JJ will now be the favorite coach of the rest of the PAC12.
This reminds me of a story from 'way back in the day. Bob Giegengack (head coach of the 1964 Olympic team, nominal coach of Frank Shorter, yada) retired in 1972 after 20+ years of coaching the Yale men. His assistant, Lee Calhoun, was elevated to the head coach's position, and when the other Ivy League coaches learned this, they went out for drinks together--knowing that they wouldn't have to worry about Yale anymore. Lee had become their favorite coach.
I started coaching right about that time. I aspired never to be the reason for other coaches' celebratory drinks.
This story is not true. Ivy coaches had more class than that and Lee Calhoun was well respected. At that time only Cornell had intense recruiting, with Penn second after Tuppeny took over, as Moon would be on the road looking for prospects. Rest of the league was content in low key recruiting. Giegengack was an excellent coach who developed some good athletes. Lee was low key, a very good hurdle coach. Unfortunately, he was a smoker and died too young.
