I think the pay your dues concept is overvalued by those who are already in an ideal position. Petros was at a D2 school for 2 years, coached at Boise for 3 years then he got the assistant gig at UGA.
There’s at least 30 D1 track coaches (probably more) with less than 3 years of coaching who landed a good job just based on their athletic history and/or the people they know.
There’s also several who have coached for years but have not coached or developed anyone significant. That shouldn’t count as “paying dues” either.
