Back when my kids ran for Bozeman (Montana) Meylan’s analysis often recognized fairly early in the season that they were going to make it to NXN and do well. As he acknowledges, his method is hungry for data to anchor the curve, but it does quite well even for courses he’s never seen. In NY where he has a ton of data, it’s even better, true.

One of my runners once found a fantasy cross-country league using NY runners and their weekly speed ratings!
That was on the old Dyestate message boards I believe. There was great fun in finding the strategic balance between picking a better runner on a team that didn't race as much vs. a slower runner on a top flight team who you knew would be racing late in the season. Great fun!
And yet some people complain about his rankings. He puts the best rankings / predictions out there

Try Dyestat rankings.
In 2022 a guy was ranked 78th nationally in the Dyestat early season rankings even though he hasn’t broken 16 or 4:29 beforehand.

Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
