It really doesn't matter since citizens have a Constitutional right to own guns.
The U.S. Constitution's 2nd Amendment states, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
The Connecticut Constitution states, “Every citizen has a right to bear arms in defense of himself and the state”
The Connecticut constitutional provision has not changed since it was adopted in 1818 as part of the state's first constitution , so clearly the intent was for every citizen to be able own guns for self protection.
"English common law had long acknowledged the importance of effective arms control, and the meaning of the Second Amendment seemed clear to the framers and their contemporaries: that the people have a right to possess arms when serving in the militia. Over the years, this “collective rights” interpretation of the Second Amendment was upheld in three Supreme Court decisions, in 1876, 1886, and most recently, in 1939 (Bogus 2000)"

english.illinois.edu/-people-/faculty/debaron/essays/guns.pdfBut I'm sure you understand law better than the Supreme Court.
The first ten amendments are sacred. They should not be reversed by any means. The rest is optional. We have already reversed one of them. (#18)

So do you believe the number of handgun deaths are irrelevant?
That's not actually a snarky question, btw. It's genuine.
What if it could be shown to your satisfaction that stricter gun laws would reduce crime? Would that be relevant to you, or is gun ownership more of a moral issue on which you won't budge?
Well said. Cars become safer, in part because of new legislation, every year. Why aren't we getting stricter with gun laws? Why not re-ban assault weapons? Furthemore, I don't understand why the right wing can't see the hypocrisy with Trumps current war on the 14th amendment yet can't touch the 2nd.
What is an "assault weapon"?

By the way, we already have lots of gun laws and restrictions.

So your response to firearm suicide rate statistics is to change the topic?
Pull all the statistics on "non-ghetto-dwelling persons" you want and firearm suicide statistics don't get any better.
Suicide is a suicide problem. This has no bearing on my right to own a weapon.
The thread topic is not your right to own a weapon, it's whether gun's protection value is greater than the potential for harm. Gun suicide is a relevant harm.

That's fine. Then let's look at the data. USA is ranked 38th in suicide rate per capita, far behind so many other countries with very strict gun control laws.

If you buy a gun, it is statistically more likely to be used by you or a member of your family for a suicide or accidental shooting than in preventing a crime.
Please provide a source for said statistics.

Suicides are mostly impulsive and "success rates" when using firearms is an order of magnitude higher than other means.
Yup. This is pretty common knowledge to anyone with an education.
