No easy answers, we don't want unnecessary surgery of course but why wait till you can't walk before replacement? You could run SOME on your new hip.
I misunderstood your original post and thought you meant that due to the effect of your hip, your cycling was no longer the same. I understand now--you meant cycling does not offer what running does.
What about give yourself a defined break from running, say 6-12 mos? I think you might be surprised at what a difference it makes. I was told at age 50 I was facing hip replacement, stopped running and came back a few years later, really without any pain almost ever x several years more now, but dreadfully slow, though I think that is other things like poor mechanics etc
